Auxiliary Volunteers

There are many citizens who wish to experience Police work through active involvement. The Sault Ste Marie Police Service's Auxiliary Unit may be for you.

Once a person has met the requirements and passed all testing areas, including a physical fitness test, then they can become a member of this Unit.

Minimum Requirements

Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Have successfully completed at least 4 years of secondary school education or have equivalent experience.
Be able to meet visual field and colour vision standards.
Never have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted.
Be prepared to participate in and successfully complete a behavioural descriptive interview along with all medical, physical, and psychological tests as required.
Have a valid driver's licence with no more than 6 demerit points.
Be of good moral character and habits.

Duties, may include, but are not limited to:

crowd management at parades and special events
searches for missing persons and large scale searches for evidence
preservation of large crime scenes at disaster sites
acting as a support unit during major emergencies or disasters
assistance in R.I.D.E., Marine, and special traffic enforcement programs
participation in regular ride-along training program
handing out promotional and public education material
and other functions as authorized by the Chief of Police

Members who are selected to enter the Auxiliary Program will have initial classroom training on such topics as: note-taking, care and use of equipment, racism and workplace harassment, emergency services, Police vehicles, driver training, law, and traffic services.
