From the date of the Incorporation of Sault Ste. Marie as a village in 1871 up to 1911, Chiefs of Police were appointed by the Municipal Council. In 1911, By-law #652 was enacted appointing a Board of Commissioners of Police who thereafter made appointments of Chiefs of Police. In 1990 with the enactment of the Police Services Act, this responsibility was continued on by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board.
