Minimum Requirements
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be physically fit and mentally able to carry out the duties of a Police Constable.
- Have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent.
- Be able to meet visual field and colour vision standards.
- Be prepared to undergo a thorough interview as well as medical and psychological tests as required.
- Produce a current “Certificate of Results” awarded by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police through a licensed vendor.
- Never have been convicted of a criminal offence for which a pardon has not been granted.
- Have a valid driver’s licence with no more than 6 demerit points.
- Be qualified in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid prior to any offer of employment being made.
- Be of good moral character and habits.

- Be of good moral character and habits.
- Proficiency of 35 w.p.m. keyboarding speed. (APPLICANTS WILL BE TESTED.)
- Dictatyping / word processing skills.
- Good judgment and assessment skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Initiative, discretion, and the ability to work well under high stress and pressured situations.
- Never have been convicted of a Criminal Offence committed in any jurisdiction for which a pardon has not been granted and provide proof of date of birth in order to verify this information.
- Be prepared to undergo and successfully complete a thorough interview, along with medical testing, vision field-testing, auditory standard testing, and any other job-appropriate tests as set by the Police Service.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s selection standards are high. If you are not presently able to minimally meet all of these standards you may want to consider taking time to improve your level of readiness by working towards those areas in which you are deficient.
